  • The Story of A Bad Boy

    Thomas Bailey Aldrich

Hardcover (Akasha Classics, Jan. 12, 2009)
In a time when children's books were populated with well-behaved little gentlemen, Thomas Bailey Aldrich dared to present an alternative point of view - childhood as he remembered it. Tom Bailey is no angel. At times a bully, a vandal, and a troublemaker, he has a healthy zest for life and a perhaps over-developed love of mischief. The book follows Tom as he engages in a series of adventures which take him from his New Hampshire hometown to New Orleans and beyond. A fictionalized account of the author's own childhood, The Story of a Bad Boy was controversial when it first appeared in 1869, but is now hailed as the precursor to other 'bad boy' stories such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. It stands in its own right as a hugely enjoyable tale.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 23, 2017)
The Story of a Bad Boy (1870) is a semi-autobiographical novel by American writer Thomas Bailey Aldrich, fictionalizing his experiences as a boy in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The book is considered the first in the "bad boy" genre of literature, though the text's opening lines admit that he was "not such a very bad, but a pretty bad boy". "Tom Bailey" is born in the fictitious town of Rivermouth, New Hampshire, but moves to New Orleans with his family when he is 18 months old. In his boyhood, his father wants his to be educated in the North and sent him back to Rivermouth to live with his grandfather, Captain Nutter. Nutter lives with his sister and an Irish servant. There, Tom becomes a member of a boys' club called the Centipedes. Together, the boys become involved in a series of adventures. In one prank, the boys steal an old carriage and push it into a bonfire for the Fourth of July. During the winter, several boys build a snow fort on Slatter's Hill, inciting rival boys into a battle of snowballs. Later, Tom and three other boys combine their money to buy a boat named Dolphin and sneak away to an island. Tom also befriends a man nicknamed Sailor Ben, whom Tom originally meets on the ship that took him away from New Orleans. Revealed as the long-lost husband of Captain Nutter's Irish servant, Ben settles in Rivermouth in a boat-like cabin. Sailor Ben helps the boys fire off a series of old cannon at the pier, much to the confusion of the local townspeople. When his father's banking job fails, Tom is invited by an uncle to work in a counting-house in New York.

  • The Story of a Bad Boy

    Thomas Bailey Aldrich

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Oct. 31, 2015)
This is the story of a bad boy. Well, not such a very bad, but a pretty bad boy; and I ought to know, for I am, or rather I was, that boy myself. Lest the title should mislead the reader, I hasten to assure him here that I have no dark confessions to make. I call my story the story of a bad boy, partly to distinguish myself from those faultless young gentlemen who generally figure in narratives of this kind, and partly because I really was not a cherub.

Paperback (RiverRun Select, Oct. 10, 2012)
"No one else seems to have thought of telling the story of a boy's life with so great a desire to show what a boy's life is, and with so little purpose of teaching what it should be; certainly no one else has thought of doing this for the American Boy." -- William Dean Howells, 1870 This humorous, poignant yarn of one lad's adventures became the inspiration for Twain's Tom Sawyer and many others. This newly typeset, highly readable edition includes over 60 illustrations by A. B. Frost, the foremost illustrator of Aldrich's time. This IS NOT a facsimile!
